BEIKOKU
KARATE-DO GOYUKAI
(BKG) was founded by Grandmaster
Isaac Henry, Jr. and George Chalian, at Governors Island, New York in 1959 under the name of
Fort Jay Karate Club and later GOVIS Karate Club. It became a
branch of Zen Nippon Karate-Do Goyukai when Master Michio Nozumi,
it’s headmaster and instructor to Grandmaster Henry appointed
Grandmaster Henry as branch chief.
Master Nozumi
received his karate training form Grandmaster Hironori Otsuka.
Grandmaster Otsuka was a famed pupil of Grandmaster Gichin
Funakoshi and the founder of the Wado-ryu (the Way of Peace and
Harmony) system of karate. Grandmaster Otsuka’s Wado-ryu is a
synthesis of Funakoshi’s karate and Japanese ju jitsu with great
emphasis on combat. Grandmaster Otsuka is credited with the
introduction of jiu kumite (free sparring) into karate.
The system as
taught by Grandmaster Henry includes further modifications based
on his experiences and exposure to other systems and methods
over his many years of practice and instruction. Grandmaster
Henry was recognized as Head of System in 1993 by the World Head
of Family Sokeship Council.
