The Power Ranger television star, Jason David Frank (known as “Dr. Tommy Oliver” the black Power Ranger) attended the event to support his roots in the martial arts. Master Frank, who is a sixth degree black belt, achieved his rank under the guidance of Master Rick Herbster, seventh degree black belt, owner and head instructor of the Rising Sun Karate Academy in Toms River, NJ.

In the adult black belt 18 to 34 year old division, Alex Alarcon and Sergio Pulido demonstrated their superior abilities in kata (forms), kumite (sparring), and weapons. Alarcon (19) achieved the rank of second degree black belt in March 2004, and now spends much of his time instructing and assisting at the dojo in any way that is needed. At BKG’s tournament, he placed 1st in weapons and 3rd in both kata and kumite.  Pulido (18), earned his rank of 1st degree black belt in March 2004, and now teaches the beginner and intermediate levels. He had placed 4th in both kumite and weapons.“ They both train very hard, and have very focused minds,” says Master Herbster.

Master Herbster’s son, Richard Herbster (13), had competed in the advanced boys 13-14 year old division, placing first both in kata and kumite. He also competed in the weapons division and had won 3rd place. Richard Herbster is a 2nd degree black belt and has won numerous tournaments in the state, regional and national level.

Every student and black belt representing the Rising Sun Karate Academy at the 22nd Annual BKG tournament had won a trophy, or a medal. The academy was awarded the Outstanding Dojo award, for winning the most trophies.

Master Herbster is very proud of his students, not because they have won, but because they fully prepared themselves mentally and physically. He trains his students with the philosophy of “If you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”  Master Herbster truly teaches the art of success. Master Jason David Frank was more than happy to watch and cheer on his most beloved fans. Although, Frank was in the midst of opening a new dojo in Houston, Texas, he took the time out of respect for his instructor, Master Rick Herbster to come support the tournament and its competitors.
