Martial Arts Help Children With ADD and ADHD
Toms
River, NJ – “Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) affects up to 5
percent of all North American children ages 5-18”, according to
Sports Illustrated For Kids writer Rose Kennedy. Karate teaches
self-discipline, builds self-esteem and a level of commitment, which
may otherwise
not be there. “The latest technique for combating the
symptoms of ADD is martial arts training”, said Dr. Samuel Schenker
of Toms River, a green belt at Rising
Sun Karate Academy
http://www.rska.com during an interview with News 12—New
Jersey’s “To Your Health” weekend show host, Dr. Bruce Bonanno.
Dr. Schenker is also a practicing interventional neurologist
specializing in nonevasive pain management procedures at the Pain
Institute of Central Jersey and Neurology in Toms River, New Jersey.
One of the
many topics addressed during Dr. Schenker’s interview with News
12—New Jersey is how the martial arts uses mind-body disciplines to
address the short attention spans of today's children, even those
diagnosed with ADHD. “Children with learning difficulty, such as
ADHD, hyperactivity or behavior problems, can benefit from the
structured learning program that martial arts training offers”, said
Dr. Schenker. “Along with a structured program, effective martial
arts training will instill self-discipline and self-esteem, a
recurring issue in children with attention disorders.”
Since there
are many forms, types and styles of martial arts instruction
available, Dr. Schenker discussed how to choose the right martial
arts school for your child with ADD or ADHD. “In choosing a program
for children, a parent needs to research the varying styles and
decide which is best suited for their child's interests, level of
development and motivation,” says Dr. Schenker. “For example,
Rising Sun Karate Academy has a state of the art success and award
system that really helps children see visible proof of their
ability.”
Dr.
Schenker’s interview with Dr. Bruce Bonanno on News 12—New Jersey’s
“To Your Health” weekend show can be seen on Saturday, December 24,
Sunday, December 25. It will also be aired the following weekend
Saturday, December 31 and Sunday, January 1, 2006.
